Mirae Asset Eyes $100M Acquisition of Korbit Crypto Exchange
Mirae Asset Group is negotiating to acquire Korbit, South Korea’s fourth-largest crypto exchange, for $70–$100 million. The deal involves major shareholders and reflects growing financial sector interest in digital assets.
Mirae Asset Group is in advanced negotiations to acquire Korbit, South Korea’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange, in a deal valued between $70 million and $100 million. Mirae Asset Consulting, a subsidiary of the group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korbit’s major shareholders, including NXC and Simple Capital Futures, which together hold about 60.5% of the exchange, and SK Square, which owns 31.5%. Korbit, founded in 2014, operates under South Korea’s strict regulatory framework and holds a full operating license, making it an attractive target for traditional financial firms seeking compliant entry into the digital asset market. Despite its regulatory strengths, Korbit’s market share is less than 1% of South Korea’s crypto trading volume, with daily trading volumes around $5.75 million, far behind market leaders like Upbit. The acquisition reflects a broader trend of major Korean financial firms expanding into the cryptocurrency sector through acquisitions. The deal’s terms and timeline have not been finalized.
