Metaplanet issues $50M in zero-interest bonds for Bitcoin

Metaplanet issued $50M in zero-interest bonds to buy more Bitcoin, aiming to expand its holdings beyond 40,000 BTC. The move highlights a growing trend in corporate crypto strategies.

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed investment firm, has issued 8 billion yen (approximately $50–53 million) in zero-coupon bonds, fully subscribed by EVO FUND, to finance additional Bitcoin purchases. This marks the company’s 20th bond issuance and reflects its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy. As of March 2026, Metaplanet holds 40,177 BTC, with ambitions to reach up to 100,000 or even 210,000 BTC by 2026–2027. The bonds are unsecured, unguaranteed, and short-dated, with redemption linked to a parallel warrant program. A portion of the proceeds will be used for bond repayment. Despite reporting a $619 million net loss in 2025, mainly from unrealized Bitcoin valuation losses, Metaplanet remains committed to expanding its Bitcoin reserves. This move places Metaplanet among a small but growing group of public companies leveraging debt instruments for crypto treasury strategies. While the announcement has not significantly affected prediction markets or Metaplanet’s stock price, it highlights a notable shift in corporate crypto investment approaches.
