Wells Fargo and global banks plan 2027 stablecoin launch

Wells Fargo and 20 global banks plan a U.S. dollar stablecoin for 2027. Use cases in the U.S. are still unclear, but tokenized deposits and digital payment solutions are underway.

Wells Fargo is advancing its digital asset strategy by partnering with 20 major international financial institutions to form a stablecoin-focused consortium. The group aims to launch a U.S. dollar-pegged digital token in the first half of 2027. Despite this ambitious plan, CEO Charlie Scharf noted during the third-quarter earnings call that stablecoin use cases in the U.S. are still unclear, and the consortium’s services remain under development. Wells Fargo has already introduced tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients, enabling 24/7 cross-border payments between U.S. dollars and British pounds via its proprietary blockchain. The consortium, which includes leading global banks, targets retail, commercial, and institutional clients, focusing on digital asset settlement and cross-border transactions. Scharf emphasized that the bank’s approach is about preparing for future opportunities, with ongoing investments in both traditional and digital payment infrastructure to enhance transaction efficiency.
