Absa unveils Africa's first institutional crypto custody
Absa launches Africa's first institutional crypto custody platform in South Africa, supporting Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, and XRPL assets for institutional clients.
Absa Group Ltd. has become the first bank in Africa to launch an institutional-grade digital asset custody platform, debuting its service in South Africa. This platform is designed exclusively for institutional clients, including asset managers, corporates, and non-bank financial institutions, providing secure storage and transfer of digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, and XRPL assets. Retail customers are not included in the initial rollout. The custody platform is built on Ripple technology and operates within a regulated banking environment, ensuring compliance and security. Absa plans to expand its asset offerings over time as the platform develops. This move comes as South Africa’s crypto market grows, with assets held by major providers estimated at $1.5 billion by the end of 2024. Absa is also considering extending its custody services to other African markets, pending regulatory approvals, marking a significant step for institutional adoption of digital assets across the continent.
