Hana Bank’s $100M digital bond settles same day on blockchain
Hana Bank issued a $100M five-year digital bond via Euroclear’s blockchain, achieving same-day settlement—the first such move by a Korean financial institution.
Hana Bank has issued a $100 million five-year foreign-currency digital bond using Euroclear’s blockchain-based platform. This marks the first time a Korean financial institution has directly utilized Euroclear’s distributed-ledger infrastructure. The transaction, completed on September 18 with Standard Chartered as the sole lead manager, processed issuance, registration, and settlement entirely on a distributed ledger. By leveraging blockchain technology, the traditional three-to-five business day settlement period was reduced to same-day (T+0) settlement. Investors can trade the digital bond through existing Euroclear accounts, eliminating the need for separate trading systems. The bond was issued under Hana Bank’s global medium-term note documentation. This development demonstrates how blockchain can streamline capital market processes, lower settlement risk, and improve efficiency by enabling rapid allocation and payment settlement.
