Banks double share on EU MiCA crypto register
Banks now account for nearly 23% of EU MiCA crypto providers, doubling to 80 since June 2026. Germany led the surge, signaling increased institutional adoption and broader digital asset access.
Traditional banks have significantly expanded their presence in the European Union’s regulated crypto market, now representing nearly 23% of all crypto-asset service providers listed on the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) register. Between late June and mid-September 2026, the number of banks on the register doubled from around 40 to 80, while the total number of listed providers increased from 243 to 349. This growth among banks outpaced that of non-bank providers, whose share dropped from 84% to 77%, despite an increase in their absolute numbers. Germany led this expansion, with several cooperative and commercial banks, including Deutsche Bank, joining the register. This trend highlights a shift toward greater institutional involvement in the crypto sector. Banks are leveraging regulatory processes to enter the market, aiming to meet institutional demand and broaden access to digital assets for European customers as regulatory windows close.
