NYSE blockchain platform enables instant stock settlement

NYSE is developing a blockchain platform for tokenized securities, enabling 24/7 trading, instant settlement, and fractional shares. Launch awaits regulatory approval after key partnerships and pilot participation.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is developing a blockchain-based settlement platform for tokenized securities, aiming to modernize traditional financial infrastructure. Operated under Intercontinental Exchange, the platform will integrate NYSE’s Pillar matching engine with blockchain technology, enabling 24/7 trading, instant atomic settlement, fractional share trading, stablecoin funding, and support for multiple blockchains. Securitize has been appointed as the first digital transfer agent, and NYSE has participated in the DTCC’s tokenization pilot alongside major financial institutions. An SEC filing in April established a framework for tokenized shares to trade alongside traditional equities. However, the platform’s launch is pending regulatory approval from the SEC and CFTC. This initiative seeks to enhance efficiency, flexibility, and accessibility in securities trading by merging traditional and blockchain-based systems, potentially transforming post-trade operations and settlement cycles.
