Japan’s banking giants plan yen stablecoin by 2027

Japan’s top three banks will jointly launch a yen-pegged stablecoin by March 2027, aiming to modernize payments and promote regulated digital currency adoption.

Japan's three largest banks—MUFG, Mizuho, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation—are joining forces to launch a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese Yen by March 2027. This initiative, backed by the Financial Services Agency, will establish a council to develop operational frameworks, governance structures, and risk management protocols. The stablecoin will be issued using a trust structure, with a designated trustee institution overseeing issuance and redemption. Pilot testing began in late 2025, and the banks plan to conduct live transactions during fiscal year 2026. This project aims to modernize Japan’s payment systems, improve cross-border transaction efficiency, and encourage regulated digital currency adoption within institutional frameworks. The collaboration marks a shift from isolated fintech pilots to a coordinated effort among major banks, setting the stage for standardized yen-based stablecoin issuance and a stronger digital asset infrastructure in Japan.
