ECB unveils Appia roadmap for tokenized markets

The ECB has launched the Appia roadmap to build a tokenized financial ecosystem in Europe, featuring the Pontes DLT settlement platform in 2026 and a full framework by 2028.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has introduced the Appia roadmap, a strategic initiative to develop a tokenized wholesale financial ecosystem across Europe. This plan focuses on integrating distributed ledger technology (DLT) with existing financial infrastructure, ensuring settlements remain anchored in central bank money. The roadmap features two main components: Pontes, a DLT-based settlement platform scheduled for launch in the third quarter of 2026, and Appia, the overarching framework that will define the architecture, standards, and governance of the future tokenized ecosystem. Pontes aims to connect blockchain-based market infrastructure with the Eurosystem’s TARGET payment systems, while Appia will establish the long-term structure and standards for tokenized markets, with a complete blueprint expected by 2028. The ECB has invited banks, firms, technology providers, and public institutions to provide feedback through a public consultation open until April 22, 2026. This initiative seeks to modernize Europe’s financial market infrastructure, enhance efficiency, and maintain central bank oversight, while fostering innovation and resilience in the European financial system.
