Hong Kong and Shanghai launch blockchain trade platform
Hong Kong and Shanghai will build a blockchain-based digital platform to streamline cargo trade and finance, integrating electronic bills of lading and trade data for greater efficiency.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Shanghai Data Bureau, and the National Technology Innovation Center for Blockchain have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration in digitizing cargo trade and finance. The agreement focuses on developing a cross-border digital platform that leverages blockchain-based documentation, electronic bills of lading, and integrated trade data systems. This initiative aims to streamline trade finance processes and reduce delays caused by paper-based workflows. Under the Project Ensemble framework, the platform will connect Hong Kong’s Commercial Data Interchange with Shanghai’s trade documentation systems through solutions like CargoX. This will create a seamless digital corridor between the two cities, targeting the $1.5 trillion annual cargo finance market. The platform is designed to improve efficiency, shorten verification times, and strengthen Hong Kong’s role in global trade by linking mainland cargo data with international financial networks. The collaboration also includes joint research on digital technologies to foster innovation in real-economy trade finance.
