Denmark’s crypto adoption remains low at 4%

Denmark’s crypto adoption is stuck at 4%, well below the EU average. Strict regulation, high taxes, and cautious banks hinder growth, but interest in ETFs and funds is slowly rising.

Denmark continues to have one of the lowest crypto adoption rates in Europe, with just 4% of its population holding cryptocurrencies. This figure has remained unchanged since 2023 and is significantly below the European average of 10–12%. Most Danish crypto holders are under 40 and typically maintain small portfolios, often valued below DKK 10,000 (around €1,350), with Bitcoin and Ethereum being the most popular choices. Several factors contribute to this low adoption rate, including strict MiCA regulations, high taxation on gains (up to 53%), and banks’ reluctance to support crypto transactions. Danish investors also favor traditional assets such as real estate and pension funds, and remain cautious due to the volatility of the crypto market. While direct crypto ownership is stagnant, there is a growing interest in indirect exposure through products like ETFs and funds, though these still represent a minor share of household wealth. New financial products and optimized tax strategies may offer future opportunities for Danish investors.
