Tether unveils self-custodial wallet for 570M users
Tether launched tether.wallet, a self-custodial app for USDT, USAT, XAU₮, and Bitcoin, with human-readable IDs, gasless transactions, and user-controlled keys for 570M users.
Tether has introduced tether.wallet, a self-custodial software wallet now available for Android and iOS. This marks Tether’s move from a backend infrastructure provider to offering a direct consumer product. The wallet supports USDT, USAT, XAU₮ (tokenized gold), and Bitcoin, including Lightning Network, across several blockchains such as Ethereum, Polygon, and Arbitrum. Users can send funds using human-readable identifiers like name@tether.me, removing the need for complex wallet addresses. The wallet enables gasless transactions, with fees paid in the transferred asset. Private keys remain under user control, featuring local signing and optional cloud backup, though specific cloud security details are not provided. Built on Tether’s open-source Wallet Development Kit, the wallet is designed for seamless transactions among users, machines, and AI agents. Leveraging its 570 million user base, Tether aims to simplify digital asset management and expand global access to crypto payments without intermediaries.
