Engie explores Bitcoin mining for surplus solar power
Engie may use surplus solar power from its Brazilian plant for Bitcoin mining, leveraging tax exemptions and flexible operations to monetize excess energy and stabilize revenue.
French energy company Engie is evaluating ways to utilize surplus electricity from its 895 MW Assu Sol solar plant in Brazil for Bitcoin mining. The plant frequently produces more power than the grid can handle, leading to wasted renewable energy. To address this, Engie is considering two main strategies: installing battery storage systems or setting up on-site Bitcoin mining data centers that can flexibly consume excess electricity. Bitcoin mining is particularly attractive because its operations can be quickly scaled to match available power, offering a stable revenue stream during periods of overproduction. The initiative is further supported by Brazil’s exemption of taxes on advanced mining equipment until 2028, which enhances the project’s financial viability. While Engie has raised its income guidance and received positive investor feedback, the company emphasizes that implementing such a large-scale project will require careful planning and is not expected to deliver immediate results.
