How Much USDC Do You Need to Start Using Tangem Pay?
No minimum USDC deposit is required to activate Tangem Pay. You complete KYC, get the Visa card details, and fund it whenever you're ready to spend. The practical question isn't the activation minimum: it's how much to load so you can actually use the card without running dry after one purchase. For a first test, think in purchase sizes: load what you expect to spend soon, then reload when needed.
What is Tangem Pay?
Tangem Pay is an optional, regulated payment feature integrated into the Tangem Wallet app. It provides a separate payment account funded with USDC or USDT held in non-custodial smart contract accounts. You can use a Visa card for purchases online or in-store, including through Apple Pay or Google Pay. Payments are processed through Visa and settled with merchants in fiat. Tangem Pay is provided by Paera LLC, and the card is issued by Rain.
Here's how the flow works. You send native USDC on Polygon to your Tangem Pay account. At checkout, a Tangem Pay purchase works like any other Visa transaction: the merchant is paid in USD via the Visa network, just as with any card. Behind the scenes, the equivalent amount of USDC is converted and deducted from your account once the purchase settles. For a $25 checkout, $25 worth of USDC is deducted from the transaction and applied after it settles.
Tangem Wallet and Tangem Pay are separate accounts inside the same app. Your Tangem Wallet holds your main crypto holdings under full self-custody. Tangem Pay is a USDC spending account.
No Minimum Balance to Activate
The activation flow has two steps: KYC verification and card issuance. Neither requires a USDC deposit. You complete KYC inside the Tangem app. Once approved, the Visa card is issued. Funding comes later, when you're ready to spend. There is no mandatory initial amount to receive the card.
This setup can feel different if you're used to bank cards or exchange cards, where the account and the spendable balance often blur together. With Tangem Pay, you can complete the identity check and card setup first, then decide how much USDC to add to the spending account.
What Happens to USDC Left on the Card?
This is where the self-custody model matters. USDC you allocate to Tangem Pay is held onchain in a smart contract you control. It is not transferred to a custodial fiat ledger. The funds stay onchain and under your control until a purchase is authorized and settled through Visa. Otherwise, you can withdraw any unspent USDC back to your Tangem Wallet or U.S. bank account.
