Vitalik Buterin Calls for DApps to Shield Against Major Outages

Vitalik Buterin urges the development of decentralized applications on Ethereum to counter risks exposed by major outages like Cloudflare’s, advocating for DApps as resilient, independent infrastructure.

A major Cloudflare outage in November 2025 disrupted about 20% of global websites, including key cryptocurrency platforms, highlighting the risks of centralized internet infrastructure. In response, Vitalik Buterin has called for the accelerated development of decentralized applications (DApps) on Ethereum to serve as resilient alternatives. He emphasized that DApps should operate independently of third-party services, without fraud, censorship, or reliance on centralized providers, and be robust enough that users remain unaffected even if major services like Cloudflare or AWS fail or are compromised. Buterin and Ethereum researchers warned that convenience often leads to increased centralization, undermining decentralization principles. They argue that DApps must evolve beyond financial tools to become foundational infrastructure for finance, identity, governance, and other critical sectors, offering stability, privacy, and resistance to external pressures. Recent outages have prompted firms to reconsider their dependence on centralized services and explore decentralized solutions as a safeguard against future technological failures.
