He proposes "mandatory diffusion"—forcing openness and interoperability on closed systems—as a solution, with adversarial interoperability and pluralistic governance as key mechanisms. Buterin urges builders to design systems with built-in checks, open standards, and distributed governance from the outset, rather than retrofitting them after scale is achieved.
