China sets 2030 goal for national blockchain network

China targets 2030 to complete its national blockchain network, focusing on key sectors and regions, while upholding its ban on cryptocurrency activities.

China has set 2030 as the target year to complete its national blockchain network, according to the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Informatization released by the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission. The plan emphasizes building a central backbone network, regional hubs, and targeted applications in major economic zones such as the Yangtze River Delta, Chengdu-Chongqing, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and the Greater Bay Area. The initiative aims to integrate blockchain technology into key sectors including trade, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics. It also prioritizes the establishment of robust technical standards and secure data exchange mechanisms to support digital modernization. Despite highlighting blockchain as a strategic priority, the plan maintains China's ban on cryptocurrency-related activities and does not propose any regulatory changes regarding cryptocurrencies. The blockchain network project is part of a broader digital push that also includes the commercial rollout of 6G and enhanced computing infrastructure.
