Starknet community backs research into L1 transition
Starknet's community voted 93.52% in favor of researching a move to a post-quantum, independent layer-1 blockchain. The non-binding poll enables further study, with a draft whitepaper due in November.
Starknet's community has shown strong support for exploring a transition from an Ethereum layer-2 network to an independent, post-quantum layer-1 blockchain. In a seven-day governance vote ending October 22, about 3,200 votes were cast, with 93.52% of voting power backing the proposal. This non-binding poll, which marked the highest participation in Starknet's governance history, empowers StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation to begin formal research and draft technical proposals, including a whitepaper expected in November. Despite the overwhelming support, any actual move to become an independent blockchain will require a separate, binding governance vote. For now, Starknet will continue operating as an Ethereum layer-2 network, with STRK as its native token and existing Ethereum bridges remaining open. StarkWare abstained from voting, leaving the decision entirely to the community. A working group has been established to examine the technical and security challenges of transitioning to a quantum-resistant layer-1 structure.
