Ethereum’s vision: The cryptographic world computer

Vitalik Buterin outlines Ethereum’s shift to a cryptographic world computer, focusing on advanced cryptography, privacy, and scalability after the Hegotà upgrade, aiming for a more secure and efficient network by 2030.

Vitalik Buterin has presented a vision for Ethereum’s evolution into a “cryptographic world computer,” moving beyond traditional blockchain models. Following the upcoming Hegotà upgrade—anticipated to be the last conventional fork—Ethereum will prioritize integrating advanced cryptographic technologies, including zero-knowledge proofs (SNARKs and STARKs), enhanced privacy features, and decentralized off-chain computation. The roadmap also highlights the adoption of optimized consensus algorithms, quantum-resistant infrastructure, and innovations like PeerDAS for efficient data sampling. These advancements are designed to lower node operating requirements, boost privacy, and enable scalable, censorship-resistant applications. By 2030, Ethereum’s verification, consensus, and block construction processes are expected to be fundamentally transformed. The network aims to become more efficient and secure, shifting away from every node repeating all computations, and marking a major step toward a hybrid system defined by cryptographic verification and distributed computation.
