Zcash holders approve faster blocks and halvings

Zcash holders strongly backed reducing block times to 25 seconds and keeping the halving schedule, with nearly 2.4 million ZEC participating and near-unanimous support.

Zcash holders have overwhelmingly approved proposals to reduce block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and to maintain the network’s existing bitcoin-style halving schedule, according to reports on the recent NU7 governance vote. Nearly 2.4 million ZEC, representing about two-thirds of eligible tokens, participated in the privacy-preserving vote—far surpassing the minimum turnout threshold. Approximately 99.9% of participating ZEC supported the faster block times, which would significantly speed up transaction confirmations and increase network capacity. Around 98.9% favored keeping the current halving schedule, rejecting a gradual issuance model. Additional proposals, such as delaying the reissuance of fees collected through the Network Sustainability Mechanism until February 2031 and disabling obsolete Sprout transactions, also received strong support. The vote was weighted by ZEC held, not by individual voters, and, while not activating NU7 changes directly, provided a clear mandate for the upgrade’s direction.
