Mark Zuckerberg has openly criticized closed AI development models, particularly those of OpenAI and Anthropic, calling them fundamentally un-American and warning of the risks of centralized power. In response, Meta is returning to open-source AI after a brief period of proprietary development with Muse Spark. Meta recently introduced Muse Glimmer, a lightweight, open-weight AI system designed for agentic tasks and optimized to run on consumer hardware. Zuckerberg is urging U.S. lawmakers to lower regulatory barriers for open-source AI, aiming to help the U.S. compete with Chinese companies like Moonshot, Alibaba, and DeepSeek, which currently lead in open-weight AI. Meta’s strategy focuses on providing superintelligence at low or no cost to individuals and small businesses, prioritizing privacy-protected personal agents for health, education, and entrepreneurship. The company also plans to establish an independent board to oversee safety standards for future AI model releases, emphasizing the need for checks and balances in AI deployment.
