Nvidia CEO, tech leaders urge U.S. to allow open AI

He marked his debut by sharing a public letter titled "Open Weight and U.S. AI Leadership," co-signed by over 20 leading technology companies, including Meta, Microsoft, Palantir, and IBM. The letter urges the U.S. government not to ban or restrict open-weight AI models. The signatories argue that open-weight models expand access to the AI economy, drive competition, and empower users. They also emphasize the importance of these models for national security and maintaining U.S. technological leadership. The group warns that restricting open models could stifle American innovation and concentrate AI power among a few companies, potentially benefiting foreign competitors. While acknowledging the risks, the letter advocates for using open models to improve AI safety and cybersecurity, rather than imposing outright bans. Notably, OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign the letter. This debate comes as U.S. officials consider new restrictions on Chinese open-weight AI systems.
