Coinbase now writes 95–100% of its code with AI

Coinbase now uses AI for 95–100% of code development, up from 40% in February. This shift led to smaller teams, workforce cuts, and AI becoming central to daily operations.

Coinbase has swiftly adopted artificial intelligence for nearly all of its code development. Estimates now indicate that 95% to 100% of the company’s code is written by or with the help of large language models, a significant increase from just 40% in February. This rapid adoption has brought major structural changes, including smaller teams and a 14% workforce reduction in May. Employees now rely on AI tools daily, with the overall coding output matching that of about 1,200 human developers. While AI handles most code writing and review, humans still oversee critical areas like core cryptographic schemes and algorithms. Coinbase’s transition highlights AI’s evolution from a productivity tool to a central pillar of its operations.
