Base launches Beryl upgrade with B20 tokens, faster withdrawals
Base’s Beryl upgrade launches June 25, introducing the B20 token standard, faster withdrawals to Ethereum, and improved network efficiency.
Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, will activate its Beryl mainnet upgrade on June 25. This upgrade introduces B20, a native token standard that allows for the issuance of stablecoins and other digital assets directly within Base’s node software, while remaining compatible with ERC-20. B20 tokens function as precompiled contracts written in Rust, running inside the node software rather than as onchain smart contracts. This design reduces overhead and enhances network performance. The upgrade also shortens the standard withdrawal period from Base to Ethereum from seven days to five and integrates the Reth V2 execution client. Beryl builds on the previous Azul upgrade, further improving token issuance, network efficiency, and user experience. The Issuer Toolkit for B20 offers role-based access control, mint and burn functions, granular transfer policies, and a freeze-and-seize mechanism. Two B20 variants will launch: a general-purpose asset and a stablecoin with fixed six-decimal precision. Binance will temporarily suspend Base deposits and withdrawals during the upgrade.
