Ethereum’s Fusaka Upgrade: Major Scalability Boost Arrives

Ethereum's Fusaka upgrade launches December 3, boosting blob capacity and introducing PeerDAS for efficient data verification. The next phase in January will double blob limits, enhancing scalability and Layer 2 operations.

Ethereum will activate the Fusaka upgrade, also known as Fulu-Osaka, on December 3, aiming to resolve the network's critical blob space bottleneck and enhance scalability. The upgrade introduces PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling), enabling nodes to verify data availability without downloading the entire blockchain, which improves efficiency and reduces operational costs for Layer 2 solutions. Currently, Ethereum processes six blobs per block, but the Fusaka rollout will gradually increase this limit to avoid network congestion. The next phase, the "Blob Parameter Only (BPO)" fork, is scheduled for January 7 and will raise the blob capacity to 14 per block, more than doubling the current limit. These changes are expected to significantly improve Layer 2 operations, support higher transaction volumes, and lay the groundwork for future upgrades, including the ambitious Gloas-Amsterdam update planned for 2026, which aims to further reduce block times and expand network capacity.
