Google and SpaceX are collaborating to develop AI data centers in orbit, primarily through Google’s Project Suncatcher. This initiative seeks to deploy solar-powered satellites equipped with Tensor Processing Units and optical communication links, aiming to create scalable AI infrastructure beyond Earth. Google, in partnership with Planet, plans to launch two prototype satellites by early 2027 to validate hardware and test space-based computing systems. Meanwhile, SpaceX has filed with the FCC to launch up to one million data center satellites. However, the project faces significant technical challenges, including heat management, radiation protection, and space debris mitigation. Both companies are engaging with additional partners and are driven by the increasing demand for energy, advanced chips, and physical space for AI data centers. The project requires substantial investment and is a key factor in SpaceX’s anticipated stock market debut.
