Ronin’s upgrade: Ethereum Layer 2 migration and tokenomics
Ronin will upgrade to Ethereum Layer 2 on May 12, causing 10 hours of downtime. The move boosts security and efficiency, reduces RON inflation, and pauses all network activity during the transition.
Ronin, the blockchain network powering Axie Infinity, will upgrade from an independent sidechain to an Ethereum Layer 2 solution on May 12, triggered by a hard fork at block 55,577,490. This transition will result in approximately 10 hours of network downtime, during which all transactions, swaps, smart contract interactions, and gaming activities will be paused. The upgrade leverages the OP Stack and integrates EigenDA for enhanced data availability, aiming to significantly improve security, scalability, and operational efficiency. A major change includes reducing RON token inflation from over 20% to below 1%, with 90 million RON tokens being redirected from staking rewards to the treasury. This strategic move addresses previous security concerns, optimizes tokenomics, and ensures high throughput for gaming applications. It marks a pivotal evolution in Ronin's infrastructure, aligning it with other OP Stack-based Ethereum Layer 2 networks.
