Buterin redefines Ethereum’s core value as data layer

Vitalik Buterin recently urged the Ethereum community to reconsider the network’s core value. He emphasized that Ethereum’s most fundamental role is as a public, censorship-resistant bulletin board for data availability, rather than merely a platform for smart contracts or payments. After attending the Real World Crypto conference, Buterin noted that many cryptographic protocols—such as secure online voting, software version control, and certificate revocation—depend on a reliable, open data layer. This layer must allow information to be posted publicly and remain tamper-proof. Buterin highlighted the PeerDAS upgrade, which boosts Ethereum’s data capacity by 2.3 times and could scale further, making these use cases more practical and affordable. He also discussed Ether’s role in spam prevention, Sybil resistance, and as a universal payment tool. Ultimately, he suggested that smart contracts should be viewed as a convenience layer, with the blockchain primarily serving as secure, shared memory for decentralized applications.
