Vitalik Buterin backs Zcash upgrade with major donation
Vitalik Buterin donated to Shielded Labs to back Crosslink, a Zcash upgrade adding a finality layer for better security and faster confirmations. The move boosts privacy tech, with a testnet and ZEC rewards planned.
Vitalik Buterin has donated to Shielded Labs to support the development of Crosslink, a security-focused upgrade for Zcash. Crosslink will introduce a parallel finality layer to Zcash’s proof-of-work consensus, aiming to prevent chain reorganizations, rollback attacks, and double-spend risks. This upgrade will anchor blocks and provide stronger settlement assurances. The new layer is expected to enable faster confirmations on exchanges, easier cross-chain integration, and improved transaction reliability. Shielded Labs plans to use the donation to advance Crosslink from prototype to incentivized testnet and, eventually, production. Participants in the testnet will have the opportunity to earn ZEC rewards. This announcement comes after the closure of an SEC investigation, providing regulatory relief for the project. Buterin’s ongoing support, including a previous donation in 2023, highlights his commitment to privacy-preserving infrastructure and has sparked renewed interest and trading activity in Zcash. The community will closely watch security audits and wallet integration as Crosslink progresses toward deployment.
