The Ethereum Foundation is advancing a plan to unify Layer 2 (L2) networks through the proposed Ethereum Interop Layer (EIL). This interoperability framework aims to address liquidity fragmentation and user experience challenges by making all L2 rollups function as a single, cohesive chain. The EIL, developed by the ERC-4337 team, leverages account abstraction and the Trustless Manifesto principles, enabling users to initiate and settle cross-L2 transactions directly from their wallets without intermediaries. The protocol is designed to preserve Ethereum’s core values of self-custody, censorship resistance, and verifiable on-chain execution. By acting as a universal adapter, the EIL allows seamless asset and data transfers, simplifies developer workflows, and enhances user mobility across the ecosystem. The wallet-centric approach ensures that both new and existing rollups are automatically compatible, eliminating the need for bridges and fragmented balances. The Interop Layer is now open for testing and, if fully integrated, could significantly improve scalability, usability, and composability within Ethereum’s expanding L2 environment.
