Barclays Makes Bold Move Into Stablecoins With Ubyx Investment

Barclays has acquired a stake in Ubyx, a US stablecoin settlement firm, marking its first direct investment in the sector and signaling a strategic push into regulated digital currency infrastructure.

Barclays has made its first direct investment in the stablecoin sector by acquiring an equity stake in Ubyx, a US-based company specializing in regulated settlement infrastructure for stablecoins. Ubyx operates a clearing system that enables the seamless settlement and redemption of stablecoins from various issuers, aiming to standardize tokens as interchangeable cash equivalents. The investment aligns with Barclays’ broader strategy to explore new forms of digital money, including stablecoins, while maintaining regulatory compliance. The size and terms of the investment have not been disclosed. Ubyx, founded in 2025, has previously raised $10 million in seed funding from notable crypto and fintech investors. Barclays’ move reflects a growing trend among major banks to engage with digital currency infrastructure, though the stablecoin market remains in its early stages and faces ongoing regulatory scrutiny. The bank’s involvement is seen as a step toward integrating traditional finance with digital assets, potentially driving further innovation and adaptation in the financial industry.
