Kyrgyzstan has launched its national stablecoin, KGST, pegged 1:1 to the Kyrgyz som, and listed it on the global cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The move, announced by President Sadyr Japarov, marks a significant step in the country's digital finance strategy and aims to modernize payment infrastructure, facilitate cross-border payments, and integrate the som into the global digital asset ecosystem. KGST is fully backed by the national currency and operates on the BNB Chain. In addition to KGST, Kyrgyzstan introduced a USD-pegged, gold-backed stablecoin, USDKG, initially available on the Tron network with plans for Ethereum expansion. The launch of these stablecoins reflects Kyrgyzstan's commitment to expanding its digital asset sector and aligns with global trends of government-backed stablecoins. Binance has provided technical expertise to Kyrgyzstan, and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, indicated that more nation-backed stablecoins are expected to be listed on the exchange.
