Tether and Kazakhstan explore tenge stablecoin, tokenization

Tether, Kazakhstan’s central bank, and Alatau City Authority signed an MoU to explore a tenge-pegged stablecoin, asset tokenization, and DeFi, with pilot projects and education planned.

Tether has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the Alatau City Authority to explore the development of a stablecoin pegged to the Kazakhstani tenge. The agreement, announced on October 7, 2026, is exploratory and does not guarantee a product launch. The collaboration aims to study international stablecoin models, define potential use cases, and prepare a concept and pilot proposal for a tenge-backed stablecoin. Additionally, the parties will develop a framework for tokenizing real-world assets, with Alatau City considered as a pilot location using Tether’s Hadron platform. Educational initiatives, including workshops on reserve management, distributed ledgers, and tokenization models, are also planned. Kazakhstan targets tokenizing up to $60 million in projects within Alatau City by the end of 2026, prioritizing financial stability and investor protection. No issuance date, blockchain, or reserve structure has been disclosed for the proposed stablecoin.
