Mastercard expands stablecoin reach with BVNK acquisition

Mastercard acquires BVNK, joins Visa in Open USD, and pilots Crypto Credential with Borderless.xyz to boost compliance and security in cross-border stablecoin payments.

Mastercard has strengthened its stablecoin strategy by acquiring BVNK, a leading stablecoin payments infrastructure provider. This acquisition gives Mastercard control over a platform processing more than $30 billion in annualized transaction volume and supporting payments in over 130 countries. Additionally, Mastercard has joined Visa in the Open USD stablecoin initiative, further expanding its influence in the digital payments space. In parallel, Mastercard is piloting its Crypto Credential technology with Borderless.xyz to enhance trust and compliance in cross-border stablecoin payments. The Crypto Credential framework introduces standardized assurance signals and shared identity checks, aiming to streamline approval, compliance, and risk management processes. The pilot involves network testing by Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe, and focuses on reducing friction and scaling compliance across multiple providers and jurisdictions. Borderless.xyz’s network connects with over 14 licensed stablecoin providers, supporting transactions in more than 94 countries and 63 fiat currencies. These efforts position Mastercard at the forefront of blockchain-based payment innovation.
