Bolivia considers USDT for national payment system

Bolivia is evaluating USDT integration into its payment system to address dollar shortages and boost digital asset use, pending regulatory approval.

Bolivia is considering integrating USDT (Tether) into its national payment system, aiming to enable the stablecoin to circulate alongside the US dollar and the boliviano. This initiative is a response to the country’s ongoing shortage of foreign currency and the increasing demand for digital assets. Local banks are expanding their stablecoin services, while government officials are conducting technical assessments and drafting regulations to oversee stablecoin activity. The proposal does not grant USDT legal tender status but seeks to provide a regulated digital payment alternative for businesses and consumers. This move follows the lifting of previous cryptocurrency restrictions in 2024, which resulted in a surge in digital asset transactions. Authorities emphasize that a comprehensive regulatory framework is still in development, and the integration remains under technical and regulatory review.
