KakaoBank Accelerates Won-Pegged Stablecoin Amid Crypto Race

KakaoBank is actively developing a Korean won-pegged stablecoin, recruiting blockchain experts and preparing for security token offerings, while navigating regulatory uncertainties in South Korea's competitive digital finance sector.

KakaoBank has entered the active development phase of its proprietary stablecoin, Kakao Coin, which will be pegged to the Korean won. The bank is recruiting blockchain developers to build the necessary infrastructure, focusing on smart contracts, token standards, and secure transaction systems. This initiative is part of KakaoBank’s broader strategy to integrate blockchain and digital assets into its financial services, including preparations for security token offerings in partnership with other financial firms. The project is supported by a dedicated task force within Kakao Group, which is exploring stablecoin issuance and custody services. Regulatory uncertainties remain, as South Korea’s central bank and lawmakers debate the rules for stablecoin issuance and operation. Despite these challenges, KakaoBank’s move reflects the growing competition among South Korean tech companies to lead in digital finance, with other firms like Naver and Dunamu also advancing similar projects. The timing of the launch is uncertain, but the bank’s efforts signal a significant step toward bridging traditional banking and digital assets in South Korea.
