Bithumb breach exposes personal data, crypto funds secure

Bithumb suffered a breach of its internal system, exposing personal data but not crypto funds. Regulators were notified, and an investigation is ongoing to assess customer data impact.

Bithumb, South Korea's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed a security breach after an unauthorized party accessed its internal mobile groupware system on October 27. This system, used by employees for internal communication and work tasks, is reportedly separate from the trading platform, ensuring that no cryptocurrency funds were lost in the incident. However, personal information was stolen, and Bithumb is investigating whether any customer data was affected. The breach was promptly reported to regulators, including the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission. This incident coincided with similar breaches at Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities, with Daishin confirming a leak of personal and credit information for 38,490 customers. Authorities are examining these cases, though there is no evidence the breaches are connected. The incidents have raised concerns about cybersecurity standards in South Korea's financial sector and may prompt stricter regulations and increased investment in security measures.
