White hats recover 52 BTC from Coldcard exploit

White-hat researchers have transferred 52.37 BTC, recovered from the Coldcard hardware wallet exploit, into the Wyoming-based Crypto Recovery Trust. This transfer, recorded in Bitcoin block 967,948, represents about 2.8% of the total funds lost in the exploit. Attackers had drained over $100 million in bitcoin by exploiting a firmware vulnerability that generated wallet seeds with weak randomness. The recovered BTC is now held in the trust while ownership claims are verified. Affected users are directed to cryptorecoverytrust.com to file claims for reimbursement. The majority of the stolen BTC, estimated between 1,393 and 1,816 BTC, remains in wallets controlled by the attackers. The exploit originated from a firmware error in March 2021. Although the vulnerability has since been patched, funds exposed before the fix remain at risk. Consolidating the recovered BTC marks a significant milestone in the ongoing recovery process for Coldcard exploit victims.
