Cronos reverses $111M after Tectonic exploit, $9M missing
Cronos reversed $111.2M after a Tectonic exploit, but $9.19M remains unrecovered as funds were moved off-chain before the rollback. Nearly two hours of transactions were erased.
Cronos, a Layer 1 blockchain, experienced a major exploit on August 30 targeting the Tectonic lending protocol. The attacker manipulated collateral values, enabling the unauthorized borrowing of around $120.4 million across nine markets. In response, validators halted the network and rolled back the chain to a block preceding the attack. This action reversed approximately $111.2 million that had not yet left the network. However, $9.19 million—about 7.6% of the affected funds—had already been transferred off-chain and remains unrecovered. The rollback erased 10,961 blocks, undoing nearly two hours of transactions, including unrelated activity. The incident significantly impacted Cronos DeFi TVL and caused a collapse in Tectonic’s deposits and loans, prompting a review of risk management across the ecosystem. The official post-mortem detailed the timeline and clarified the exploit’s scale and consequences.
