CoinGecko’s 2026 State of Crypto Security Report highlights that from January 2025 to July 2026, the crypto industry suffered over $3.63 billion in losses across 245 security incidents. Attack frequency has sharply increased, but the average loss per incident has decreased. The top 10 attacks accounted for more than 72.5% of total stolen funds. Key vulnerabilities included supply chain and infrastructure weaknesses, private key compromises, and smart contract exploits. Centralized exchanges were most affected by key leaks, while decentralized applications lost significant amounts to smart contract flaws. Notably, about 60% of affected platforms had completed independent security audits, but most attacks exploited areas outside audit scopes. Insurance coverage dropped by 20.2%, while some exchanges launched new protection funds. Attackers increasingly used mixers, bridges, and were often linked to organized crime or state-sponsored groups.
