CertiK: Physical crypto attacks surge in 2026

CertiK reports 52 physical attacks on crypto holders in H1 2026, up 33%. Losses hit $124M, with France hardest hit. Home invasions surged, marking a shift from digital to physical threats.

Blockchain security firm CertiK has reported a significant increase in physical attacks, known as "wrench attacks," against cryptocurrency holders during the first half of 2026. There were 52 confirmed incidents worldwide, representing a 33% rise compared to the previous year. Financial losses from these attacks—including ransom demands and stolen funds—surged to approximately $124 million, a dramatic jump from $10.5 million in the same period last year. Home invasions became the most prevalent method, escalating from just one case to 20. Europe, and especially France, emerged as the main hotspot, with France alone accounting for 33 of the 52 reported cases. These attacks circumvent digital security by directly targeting individuals, using violence, intimidation, or threats to obtain digital assets or private keys. This trend signals a shift in crypto-related crime from technical hacks to physical coercion, raising serious concerns about personal safety for crypto holders.
