European authorities have dismantled Cryptomixer, a cryptocurrency mixing service that laundered over $1.4 billion in Bitcoin since 2016. The coordinated operation, led by law enforcement from Germany and Switzerland with support from Europol and Eurojust, took place in Zurich and resulted in the seizure of three servers, 12 terabytes of data, and more than $27 million in cryptocurrency. Cryptomixer operated as a hybrid mixer accessible on both the clear web and dark web, enabling users to obscure the origins of funds linked to drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, ransomware attacks, and payment-card fraud. The platform's software blocked blockchain traceability by pooling and shuffling transactions, making forensic analysis difficult. The takedown included confiscation of the cryptomixer.io domain, which was replaced with an official seizure notice. Experts note that while the shutdown will disrupt criminal groups relying on the service, many are expected to migrate to alternative mixers or high-risk exchanges. The operation is part of a broader European crackdown on crypto-enabled crime and signals increasing regulatory scrutiny of cryptocurrency transactions.
