Irish authorities have recovered a third batch of 500 bitcoins, valued at nearly $31 million, from the crypto holdings linked to convicted drug trafficker Clifton Collins. With support from Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, the Criminal Assets Bureau has now seized a total of 1,500 BTC, worth over $92 million, in this case. The original stash, amassed through illegal activities between 2011 and 2012, consisted of 6,000 BTC. Much of it was believed lost after Collins lost access to the private keys in 2017. Recent blockchain activity revealed a $30 million bitcoin transfer, raising questions about whether the assets are being prepared for sale or simply moved for technical reasons. Authorities have not clarified the purpose of these transactions. Despite these recoveries, wallets tagged to Collins still hold about 4,500 BTC, worth more than $275 million, indicating a significant portion remains inaccessible. The case highlights the challenges of recovering digital assets in criminal investigations and the evolving role of exchanges and law enforcement in managing seized cryptocurrencies.
