Crypto fund manager investigated after fiancée’s death

Crypto investor Joe McCann is under investigation in Zanzibar after his fiancée Ashly Robinson died in suspicious circumstances. Authorities cite suicide, but her family disputes this. McCann's passport is withheld.

Joe McCann, founder of the crypto investment firm Asymmetric, is under investigation by Tanzanian authorities following the death of his fiancée, U.S. influencer Ashly Robinson, during a trip to Zanzibar. Robinson, also known as Ashlee Jenae, was found unresponsive on April 9 in a private villa at the Zuri Zanzibar resort, where the couple was celebrating her birthday and engagement. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police reported that Robinson died by suicide after a heated argument with McCann, with hotel staff intervening and separating them into different rooms twice. However, Robinson’s family disputes the suicide ruling, calling the circumstances suspicious and launching a GoFundMe campaign for related expenses. The official cause of death is listed as cerebral hypoxia due to strangulation and suffocation. McCann’s passport has been confiscated, and he has been asked to remain in Tanzania while authorities await forensic autopsy results. The investigation is ongoing, with involvement from both local authorities and the U.S. Embassy.
