Ethereum repurposes DAO hack funds for security initiative

Ethereum repurposes $220M-$250M in unclaimed DAO hack ETH to fund security projects, staking a portion for ongoing yields and supporting ecosystem resilience.

Ethereum is launching a major security initiative by repurposing unclaimed funds from the 2016 DAO hack. Reports estimate the fund's size between $220 million and $250 million, sourced from dormant ETH linked to the incident. The newly established TheDAO Security Fund will provide grants to projects focused on enhancing Ethereum’s security. Distribution will occur primarily through DAO governance mechanisms, including quadratic funding and ranked-choice RFPs. A significant portion of the ETH will be staked, generating an estimated $8 million in annual yields at current rates, ensuring ongoing support for security efforts. Some funds will remain reserved for potential future claims. This initiative, confirmed by key Ethereum figures, marks a symbolic return to DAO-based coordination and transforms a historic vulnerability into a resource for safeguarding Ethereum’s future.
