CFTC Greenlights Bitnomial for Regulated Crypto Prediction Markets

The CFTC has approved Bitnomial to launch regulated prediction markets for crypto and real-world events, requiring transparency and full collateralization, marking a significant step in U.S. crypto regulation.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a no-action letter to Bitnomial Exchange and its clearinghouse, allowing the launch of regulated prediction markets and event-based contracts tied to cryptocurrency prices, economic indicators, and other real-world outcomes. This regulatory approval exempts Bitnomial from certain complex reporting requirements, streamlining operations for fast-moving platforms while maintaining oversight. Bitnomial must publish detailed trading data, including timestamps and sales information, on its website and provide this data to the CFTC upon request. All positions must be fully collateralized, prohibiting leverage and ensuring a 1:1 backing to maintain liquidity and prevent cascading liquidations. This move reflects a growing openness among U.S. regulators to innovative prediction markets enabled by blockchain technology, distinguishing Bitnomial’s offering from unregulated platforms and providing a compliant venue for U.S. participants. Interest in such markets has increased, particularly around major events like the 2024 elections.
