SEC Uncovers $48.5M Fraud in VBit Bitcoin Mining Scheme
The SEC charged VBit's founder with misappropriating $48.5 million from investors through fraudulent bitcoin mining agreements, misrepresenting operations, and diverting funds for personal use. VBit is now defunct.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has charged Danh C. Vo, founder of bitcoin mining firm VBit, with misappropriating $48.5 million from investors. VBit raised over $95.6 million from around 6,400 investors by offering bitcoin mining rigs and hosting agreements, promising passive income. The SEC alleges that VBit sold more hosting agreements than it had mining rigs to support, misrepresented its operations, and diverted funds for personal use, including gambling and transfers to family members. Vo controlled the company’s communications and is accused of creating a false image of operational strength. After filing for divorce in 2021, Vo left the U.S. with the remaining funds. The SEC considers the hosting agreements unregistered securities and highlights the case as a warning for the crypto sector regarding regulatory oversight. VBit was acquired by Advanced Mining Group in 2022 and is now defunct, leaving investors with significant losses.
