Coinbase Ireland fined for financial governance failures

Coinbase Ireland was fined €3.25M for failures in client fund protection and governance, with technical and organizational issues found between 2020 and 2025.

The Central Bank of Ireland has fined Coinbase Ireland Limited €3.25 million for significant failures in client fund protection and outsourcing governance. The investigation covered breaches that occurred between November 2020 and August 2025. Authorities found serious shortcomings in the management of fiduciary deposits and governance structure, including excessive reliance on the U.S. parent company and insufficient local expertise. Technical inconsistencies and coding errors led to an average underfunding of 0.54% in protection accounts during 2023 and the first half of 2024. Some issues arose from measures taken during sector crises to safeguard user assets. The penalty, agreed upon in a settlement, still awaits judicial confirmation.
