Coinbase approved for USDC-native derivatives clearinghouse

Coinbase gained CFTC approval to operate a USDC-native derivatives clearinghouse, allowing it to clear fully collateralized futures, options, and swaps, but not leveraged products.

Coinbase has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate Coinbase Clearing LLC as a US derivatives clearing organization. This milestone marks the first time a major crypto exchange will run a USDC-native clearinghouse for regulated derivatives in the United States. With this approval, Coinbase can now clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps using USDC as collateral, enabling 24/7 settlement. Leveraged products remain excluded and will still require external clearing partners. This development completes Coinbase's regulated derivatives infrastructure, now encompassing brokerage, exchange, and clearing services. The new clearinghouse gives Coinbase direct control over settlement, eliminates the need for variation margin calculations, and ensures client funds are segregated from Coinbase's assets under US bankruptcy rules. This move is a significant regulatory milestone, positioning Coinbase to offer more efficient and flexible derivatives products to institutional clients.
