Uniswap Founder Slams Citadel's SEC Push to Regulate DeFi

Uniswap's founder accuses Citadel of lobbying the SEC to regulate DeFi protocols and developers as centralized intermediaries, warning this could undermine decentralization and stifle innovation in the sector.

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams has publicly criticized Citadel Securities and its CEO, Ken Griffin, for lobbying the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to regulate decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and their developers as if they were centralized financial intermediaries. Adams argues that such regulation would undermine the decentralized nature of DeFi, stifle innovation, and force the sector into a more centralized and regulated model. Citadel contends that DeFi protocols, developers, and validators should be subject to the same rules as traditional exchanges and brokers, claiming that DeFi systems coordinate buyers and sellers similarly to established financial institutions. Adams and other DeFi advocates reject this view, emphasizing that DeFi operates on open-source code and decentralized governance, and warning that excessive regulation could drive developers away and limit the transformative potential of decentralized platforms. The debate has sparked strong reactions within the crypto community, with concerns that regulatory changes could reshape the DeFi landscape and hinder its growth.
